A very quick and enjoyable read that's surprisingly gripping for a kids book and especially clever in tying together so many threads of a story across many generations so elegantly. A brilliant tale of fate, with brutally efficient delivery of the moral lessons which don't shy away from forcing the reader to address it themself. Overall, a really good book.

I was really excited to find out this book was on the reading list. I love the movie and had always wanted to read the novel it was based off of and I found this to be the opportune moment. It really was a great novel that I instantly fell in love with. Sachar painted a beautiful tale before my eyes and the characters were to die for, even more so than the movie made them out to be in my opinion. It was easy to read and it was a good experience too. I'm glad I finally had the opportunity to read it. I can see why this book would be used in an elementary classroom. It has all of the elements that elementary students are learning about; character development, plot, story structure, and descriptive vocabulary. I can see myself using this in one of my future classrooms as a very helpful teaching tool, it also would be fun to read aloud to the classroom and then watch the movie together as a reward!
