I loved this book. It is probably my favorite of the brother's books. We get to find out that there is more to Helen than her innocence and beauty, and see her bloom under Mathiras's love. She was just the sounding board that Mathiras needed so he could get out of his own head about all his responsibilities as captain. Lots of adventure, a bit of angst, and KITTENS (yay!). Just read it! ... but only after looking at the reading order list on Rubydixon[dot]com.

Not my favourite Corsair.

Jade & Adiron started Corsair Brothers in such a way that they'd already set the bar high. From Adi being his jolly self, Kesper getting all hot-headed to the stoic-faced Lord Straik getting pulled down a notch or two, I enjoyed every single minute of this. But Mathiras was the book I had been waiting for after Kesper's, so I remember being pretty frustrated when that did not happen. But it's okay, Lord Straik grew on me, so I won't complain about that any longer.

The glaring issue for me with Mathiras was that all of their problems relating to the illegal smuggling could've been closed at the end of the previous book or just at the beginning of this one, so that Helen and her hot alien beau got a storyline different from the rest.

I can't speak for other readers, but after three books, I was ready to move on to some other sub-plot or a new arc but I got 566 pages of off-paced romance that picked back up on the same situation. Helen was cool, but Mathiras got on my nerves. Sheesh dude, make-up your mind already!

I don't even have to say how much I love the universe RD has built in her books but this one wasn't for me. Which sucks, 'cos the cover's hot. x

This whole series wasn't really for me, but this one was particularly rough. Helen is full-on Born Sexy Yesterday, and the childishness of her character isn't helped by either the MMC infantilizing her or Hollie Jackson doing a childish Marilyn Monroe voice for her. Made it all feel kinda creepy. And despite being an avid monster romance fan who wasn't even put off by spider men or inhuman anatomy in other books, somehow having a clit behind her ears and bunches everywhere else was just a bridge too far for me.

I had to put it down for literal months, and powered through the rest, but wanted to finish if only for the set-up for Ice Planet Clones. And of course Bethiah was a joy as always! But I agree with those saying this one was just too long. The ending especially felt dragged out. So while I wouldn't go so far as to say this is bad, and I didn't hate it, it was a very sort of Meh addition to my beloved IPB universe.
