This might be one of the most important true crime related books you can read.
Monroe explores four women who were interested in true crime, the Detective, the Victim, the Defender, and the Killer. Each case engages with different aspects of true crime obsession linking them to a weird context and Monroe's own experience as journalist and a true crime reader.
Each of the cases is fascinating, from the woman making teaching aids and getting in to a fight with Harvard, to the Columbine obsessed Tumblr user who planned mass murder, but the middle chapters were the most interesting to me personally. The Victims rights movement and the enduring impact of the murder of Sharon Tate on the US, and Anglophone, legal world is such an important story, as is the impact of the Satanic Panic and the false convictions that followed. Both of these Monroe shares in a very easy to read but detailed way.
Monroe is also blessed by being a fantastic, very engaging writer. The book never feels like it is dragging or getting bogged down in technical issues, even when we are getting into the more complex topics.
Before you read or watch any more true crime, read this book.

DNF Great topic, but the whole thing was a jumbled mess. Did this book not have an editor?

very thoughtful and nuanced take on our collective obsession with gruesome true crime stories. really enjoyed this read, would’ve loved if the ending chapter tied things together slightly better but all in all an excellent read
Interesting and nuanced discussion around what draws people (specifically women) to true crime. For once a true crime book I enjoyed whilst reading and didn’t leave me feeling weird and guilty afterwards.
