An interesting analysis of why the true crime genre is so popular among women. I liked her approach of taking four women as examples of an archetype” and exploring both their biographies and the societal implications of what they were trying to accomplish. I liked that there is no easy answer, and that it isn’t about either praising or condemning the genre. I’ve been on a true crime kick for the last months, and this has made me more self-aware, but in a good way. It’s also very well written.

occupied my mind a lot when i wasn’t reading it

YES THIS BOOK WAS IT!
FINALLY a book that gets into the why of why women love true crime, without it being a one word answer. Instead, we get four stories explaining four possible reasons why women are drawn to stories of crime. I learned a lot and highly enjoyed this book - excellent writing!

audiobook - I enjoyed this a lot. I didn't care so much about the parts with the author's experiences or thoughts as they weren't unique or really exciting, but I enjoyed the crime stories, especially given that they were fairly high profile, so it was fun to learn more about the Manson family, the WM3, etc. well-performed audiobook.

The fascination with true crime, with the women who are attracted to the subject, is delved into, and at points I felt maybe I was being written about. Rachel Monroe doesn't just talk about other women who are obsessed with aspects of true crime, but her own fascination with it as well - something that I appreciated because it made the book much more personal and, well, relatable as well.
If you like true crime, this is one that should be checked out.

If you asked me to tell you what this book was about I’m not sure I’d be able to tell you. It felt disjointed and all over the place.
