Edit - It's been 2 days since I finished The Waste Lands and all of my slight reservations have disappeared. The more it's sat with me the more I like and appreciate the book. 5 stars all the way.

I just finished this about 5 minutes ago so am still processing this read, but I'm not sure how I feel about this book. A lot of people say this is among their favourite Dark Tower novels but I think I preferred The Drawing of the Three. Maybe I was expecting too much but , boy, it was still a great read but just lacked that certain something to make it a 5 star.

I'm not sure if I'll dive straight in and read book 4 next. I have Wizard and Glass on my shelf but my copy is 840 pages long. 840 PAGES! And I've heard the vast majority of this book is made up of Rolands backstory - hmmm; whilst his backstory is no doubt important, I can't say I'm looking forward to taking that massive journey.

I feel like the further I get into this series, the more it improves. The world building gets more crispy with each situation our ka-tet gets into, and with those challenges the real world stakes grow. We are now more steeped in Mid-World than NYC which is a PLUS, but I have a feeling that these NYC laden flashbacks will keep occurring to my dismay. Still doesn’t reach the heights of any of King’s one-off novels, but it is an excellent entry to a so-so story so far (you can probably tell I wasn’t the biggest fan of Gunslinger or Dot3).

King does it again with this absolute banger. Really enjoyed all of the character development while still getting some juicy plot development as well. His writing is just so easy to read.
