The collection finishes with a crappy stone age hunter on his tip-toes in a cave making art. He's not even a good at crafts, but instead survives off of scraps of meat from the fire. He's a beautiful loser (to steal another poet's phrase) but he's Al Purdy's kind of outcast. Purdy's work has an awareness of deep-time, that our civilization is just a blip - that we are a heart beat away from being frightened hunter-gathers just scraping by. He also has a wonderful ribald humour that mixed with lyricism. Glad I re-read this.
