“I feel like I live in a crack between worlds, and sometimes I feel like I might die inside it.”

I'd like to thank HarperCollins Canada for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review!

The classic Frankenstein is so intriguing, with its moral and ethical commentary and exciting sci-fi elements. That's why I was excited to read a more romantic take on this well known story. I had a lot of fun reading this! Angelika starts off as a very unlikeable character, but I enjoyed seeing her grow as time went on. I found myself enjoying her character more and more, and her quirks were what made her loveable! The mystery of who Will truly was before he died was an exciting subplot. Seeing Angelika, Will, and Victor uncover bits and pieces of Will's past life really picked up the pace of the story. Overall the romance was fun to read about but I wasn't a huge fan of the love triangle. Will and Angelika's chemistry also felt a bit like it came out of nowhere but looking past that, they were really cute together! The writing flowed nicely and I felt that the beginning of the book was particularly strong. I listened to the audiobook and definitely recommend it, the narrator does a great job of capturing the essence of each character. A cute and romantic retelling of the gothic classic.

I have this ongoing problem with Sally Thorne books where there's so much dialogue that I can't actually keep track of where the characters are and what's going on in the scene. It worked in The Hating Game, but both this and 99 Percent Mine I kept losing track of what was going on at any giving time.

The premise was definitely interesting, but the execution, not as much. Sally Thorne of one of the booktok famous authors with The Hating Game and thought maybe this newest book will be good. Haven't read The Hating Game, but if the writing style is similar, my ambivalence towards booktok recommendations is affirmed once again.

Characters improved a bit towards the end, but Will's sudden change of heart did not make sense to me. The characters felt flat for at least 65% of the book.

I listened to this as an audiobook narrated by Moira Quirk and I highly recommend! I recommend any books narrated by her, she imbues a lot of emotion and tension into her reading style that really sucks you in. I wonder if I would have liked this book as much without her charming narration, but I think so. It is what it says on the tin, Victor Frankenstein had a sister who worked with him and she made her own man to be her match. Romance, drama, moral quandaries, and hilarity ensue. If you don't like romance in general you may not like this, since that's what it is at its core with a blanket of spookiness over the top. That worked great for me, since I love spooky stuff and I love romances. My biggest issue I think is that it had a weird mixed message about religion? It felt out of place.

Such a delightfully fun, silly, gothic adaptation that accomplished exactly what it set out to do! If you went into this book expecting a modern rom-com with all the usual tropes and themes, Angelika Frankenstein would surely be a disappointment. Instead, it's a wacky fan fiction that loves poking fun at itself, while exploring big themes of religion, confidence, and wealth in interesting ways. My only complaint is the picture-perfect ending, especially the romance's conclusion; although the insinuation of Mary Shelley's famous tale was a silver lining. This novel is certainly something different, but the book knows it — and I love it.
