I think I am too stupid for this book. A lot of it went over my head, and the things I did understand we're boring and dry. Maybe I just don't know enough about America at this time, and the generation of people Fitzgerald is examining, I'm not sure. But I felt like I need to phone up an English professor and get some kind of insight and background info.
Amory often made no sense, the ending wasn't profound at all (contrary to what I've been told) I didn't feel like important things were being said, I felt like the author was drunk and had some great idea that got all tumbled around.
Maybe I would have liked it more if I understood more but I doubt it. I just don't think it was for me.

4.5

This was such a beautifully written book.

This was such a quintessential Fitzgerald novel, and in that respect I loved it! I felt very unsympathetic towards the main protagonist Amory Blaine, which I think is the point. He is very vain and immersed in a world full or greed and status. I loved the references to different literary/art idols like Tolstoy and Charles Dana Gibson. Was this the best novel I've ever read, unfortunately no. Did I enjoy it, absolutely!!

I definitely liked Gatsby better. However, This Side of Paradise was not totally lacking. About the middle of the book, Fitzgerald switches to screenplay/play format which I found enjoyable. I suppose without the benefit of a lit teacher to dissect ridiculously small details, I probably missed some of the deeper meaning here and enjoyed the book considerably less than I should have...

This book really wasn’t for me. I found the narrative meandering and disjointed.

The real context behind the book is much more interesting than the book itself!

Sorry to report that it was quite boring to the point where I almost fell asleep a coupla times. But the cover is so pretty I stayed with it through the end. 10 points to me!

F Scott at his best

What can I say? It's a classic for a very good reason. This book transports you to a time and place that was just this side of magical. The book reads like a dream . One of my very favorites from Fitzgerald.
