This is book 10 in the Rizzoli series and I recommend that you read them in order. You should also be prepared for differences between the books and the tv series. My wife and I like both. Most of Gerritsen's books tend to be a bit creepy, but this one is super creepy. A murder takes place in Boston's Beacon Hill, a very rich, exclusive neighborhood. Two adults and their 3 children are murdered. The only survivor is their foster child, Teddy Clock. Teddy's parents were murdered in the US Virgin Islands. Their yacht blew up and Teddy survived.
Jane Rizzoli, Boston PD homicide, is called to the scene. When she starts investigating, she finds other murders with a chilling resemblance. Two parents murdered, a child survives, then the adoptive parents are murdered and the same child survives. But the other murders are outside of Boston and her boss considers the case closed when their chief suspect dies trying to escape the police. Jane does solve the case, with help from Dr. Maura Isles, Boston M.E., and her partner, Detective Frost.
I liked the way the tension builds throughout the plot, gradually exposing who the killer was.
I also liked the side subplots, Jane's family issues and Maura's continuing hostility from the Boston PD(explained in book 9). There is also Maura's relationship with a teenager who saved her life in book 8.
All of it made up a very satisfying read with an ending that tied up all the threads. I read this library book in 3 days.

3.5 -- As with most other Rizzoli & Isles novels, I couldn't put Last to Die down. The stories always captivate me and I need to read just one more chapter, ok fine three more.

I would have preferred more from from Rizzoli's or Isles's perspective and a lot less from Claire's. There were some loose ends that didn't get tied up, a recurring theme in the last few books of this series. I'm curious to see where Gerritsen will take the Rizzoli family based what happened in this novel.

Gerritsen does it again! Last to Die kept me riveted from the moment I read the summary in an Israeli bookstore and I couldn't help but buy it to read, and this was knowing I had a weight limit that I was fast approaching for my suitcase. Jane and Maura are a fantastic team, and their combined skills made it light up. I was done within a day, reading it during every free moment. A worthy addition to the Rizzoli and Isles series.

When I bought this book from Better World Books, I had no idea what it was about. All I knew was the author's name - I'd never read anything by her before, but I didn't know anything about Last to Die except that it was a suspense novel.

What can I say, I like surprises!! XD And this book did turn out to be a very good surprise. It was captivating and I ended up finishing it in about 2 days. I actually have ordered some more of the Rizzoli & Isles mysteries because they are so fascinating. A bit gory, but with most forensic pathology type thrillers, you're not going to avoid gore.

The only reason that - for me - it didn't get a 5/5 rating was because I didn't realize it was the 10th book in the Rizzoli & Isles series, and there is a fair amount of backstory that I was missing. I mean, not to the point of absolutely needing to read the other books in the series in order to understand what was going on, but some of the references - like to the Mephisto Society, or Isles' relationship with her family (which seemed like a hugely weird thing to throw in the middle of this book unless it's an ongoing thing in the series) - I definitely would've preferred to read the earlier books in the series first.

Also, the ending was a little sudden - unexpected, but in a very confusing sort of way. I think I may reread it to try to make sure I understand all that took place.

That being said, this was definitely a book I would recommend, and probably would reread (especially after I read the rest in the series).
