Donna Tartt

3.96 AVERAGE

I have really mixed feelings about this book. Donna Tartt is an amazing writer and this book proves it. The writing was captivating, transfering you to the protagonist's surroundings, making you vividly experience his concerns, worries and stress. During my reading, his desparation was felt by me on a great extent, which is a great example of Donna's succesful writing style, but also made this reading quite difficult and long, because, while on the protagonist's mind and experience, a vivid course of unfortunate events and quite overwhelming thoughts occur, that most of the time I couldn't read more than 30 pages at a time. But this happens many times, not only in books but real life too, the notion and ideals of others can affect you greatly, if you let them cross the line. And I dared to cross the line of my mental endurance, and it was TOTALLY WORTH IT!
The Goldfinch, isn't great only due to the incredible writing, but also for many other things.
The plot does not dissapoint, considering that it is so well thought out, so easily unwrapped in front of you and so interesting, a cozy form of mystery and adventure, that I have only seen in Donna Tartt's books. Never monotonous, experiencing all the aspects of Theo's experience, the addiction, the guilt, the recklessness, the philosophy and his way of forming various and different realationships with people after his mother's loss. Watcing a character so unique trying to find his place, in a unique, as well, environment, and to become untrackable when it comes to his past...-
It was an amazing, challenging, interesting and unique experience!!!
I 100% recommend it (not if you're trying to get out of a reading slump)!

3.5. The first 500 pages were magical prose that grabbed you but the last almost 300 - I just couldn't anymore. My he ending threw me for a loop and I didn't finish it completely. I just couldn't.

About 10 hours in, the story is interesting but has not hooked me to a point that I am itching to get through the next 22 hours. So sadly, I will wait for the movie.

Actually life changing.
