a 14-year-old trying to start a conversation about the government that could be perceived as traitorous. His dad backhands him and then orders him to spar, which turns into a beating. His mother is afraid for the boy's life a few times during the match.

Only giving slightly less than 5 stars after reading loose ends in the book and learning that the author has discontinued it. It’s understandable but it’s heart wrenching that I’ll never get a conclusion from the little girl being kidnapped, some godlike blood manipulator, and the threat of the strongest army in the world filled with theonites and sub-theonites.

took a little while to warm up, but when it did, I was all in. At 630 pages, it felt too short almost. There's a whole lot more story that feels like could be told and is waiting in the wings. Some great character stories with wonderful redemption arcs that ensure, despite how much more story there seems to be, that the ending closes in a satisfying way.
