Honestly this is a fantastic book. The characters, the discussion it creates with the reader about the nature of propaganda, politics and warfare. The characters are full of complex motivations, doubts, traumas, triumphs and tragedies. Mamoru is such a good kid, all of Misaki’s kids are. Misaki is so multidimensional. Takeru really puts you through a hate/love dynamic and you even come to sympathize with him at points. The supporting characters are even immensely layered through how they handle the highs and lows of their lives before and amidst the narrative of this novel. “Sword of Kaigen” is quite the appropriate title for this.

DNF 53%

Technically this is a DNF, but I’m giving it one star anyway as I did read a lot of it and honestly would still give it that rating if I ever finished it.

At first I was genuinely enjoying myself, I liked Misaki but Mamoru was the character I really wanted the focus to be on or I wanted them both to work together as a mother and son duo! They both have their different strengths and character that would have worked if we saw more of Mamoru
but instead he had to die halfway through ruining it for me as I was hoping for him to see the outside world.

My other issue is the formatting as well. It confused me when the dialogue was written with italics as I genuinely thought that was how the whole book would be written, thankfully it wasn’t (for the most part) but it was jarring and a bit too confusing.

Overall, I do wish I could finish this book but it would be a slog and not worth it when I have other books I could enjoy.

Beautifully written story about the tragedies and reality of war, in a world so different from our own, but still so grounded and human. An incredibly emotional story mixed with an amazing power system and very well written action, you will most definitely not want to put this book down.

Perfect 100/100 book. One of my favorite books ever. Slice of life story for more than 50% of the book. It was emotional, it hit right in the feelings
