An okay read. It's a typical YA story, just set in space. Nothing groundbreaking or inventive.
adventurous fast-paced

This was so much fun!
I generally avoid sci-fi, and if I do read it I prefer something along the lines of The Martian so I was pleasantly surprised by this. I love classic re-tellings, especially with a more modern sensibility and diverse characters which is why I picked this up from my local library. I could have done without the romance, too much teen angst for my taste but I appreciate that this was targeted at a YA audience and was the premise of the book. I'd love to see this author attempt something a little darker, little more serious but that's the adult talking. Overall this was an enjoyable read, I would recommend if you want to dip your toes into sci-fi and I've ordered a copy for my neice's birthday.

This book surprised me in nothing but good ways.

The Stars We Steal is a space retelling of Persuasion, which, is a book I have not read.

That being said, I thought this book was both charming and predictable. It was a very easy read, however, the plot did not have enough drive in it for me to be excited. I couldn't really connect to the characters, either, which may have to do with the way the story was told. I didn't think they were bad characters, but there was no emotional connection. And no one ended up helping the poor? Like, dang, that sucks. And there wasn't closure concerning Leo's mom. I would have liked for the end to not have been so abrupt.

All in all, I think it's a light read if you're trying to decompress your brain.

This was mostly my fault because I picked this up either wanting original Persuasion or For Darkness Shows the Stars by Diana Peterfreund (a different retelling of Persuasion set in space). And of course this book is neither of those things because it is its own book. But also the writing is very anachronistic and not in a way that makes sense with the pseudo historical inspired space setting. The world building never gels in a way that makes sense. And Leo as a narrator is really just okay--never being very compelling or sympathetic.
