I went into this expecting romance, and came out mildly terrified and upset! I would say this novel starts off as a contemporary, moves into romance, and definitely ends as a thriller; Genre-defying, how exciting!
I wanted to give this book two stars because the ending pissed me off! I found it unnecessary and although it was moving, I think it was mainly added for the shock factor. If you've read the book basically the murderous love interest Richard/ Robert poisons and then shoots her dog resulting in the dog's death. The romance was cute and predictable, but the "thriller" element had me questioning a few characters at first. I do wish I knew more about her late husband, Jim and I would like to know more about what happened to Andrea's character, but perhaps I just missed it!
I didn't think I'd get along with Nicholas Sparks' writing, but it actually was really engaging. I guess that is something to be expected of a well-known and well-loved author, but I figured he wouldn't be for me. One thing I really liked and was definitely the highlight of the novel was the characters. Each character, including characters that were not a part of the main cast, was so well-done and fleshed out. Each character had a personality and a back story that made sense! I don't think I'll ever pick up another book of his and I'll probably end up giving this book to my grandma to read.

A very different type of Nicholas Sparks book - I really enjoy this one for the thriller/mystery elements incorporated into this one. Although, I don't feel like the romance is at the same level as other Sparks books.
Graphic: Stalking and Animal death
Moderate: Murder, Death, and Sexual content
Minor: Grief and Cancer
