I know it's getting 5 stars because I personally like it as opposed to anything critical. Proulx's landscapes are the best part, followed closely by the dynamic she creates between Jack and Ennis and how so much of what's not said by them gives so much insight into what is being said.

Ennis and Jack both take a job wrangling sheep on Brokeback Mountain where they passionately build a relationship that will follow them both throughout their lives.
Fantastic writing. Very touching.
The ending made me tear up.
