So slow and confusing. Could not get into it!

It is well written and has lots of interesting ideas brought up but is severely lacking in its story. It spends the entire book setting up what would be a very fun “Arrival” style plot and ends with basically no resolution of that plot. I understand that the focus of the book is to ask questions about consciousness and potential communication with other species but without resolution to the plot it falls very flat for me. I also didn’t care at all about the B-plots.

This was an excellent read.
The novel addresses questions of consciousness in a world where we are not the only self-aware beings. Some artificial and others evolving in the ocean unseen.

I am torn. On one hand, the story is exciting to read and entertaining. On the other hand, the author only scratches the surface of the themes presented in this book and does not discuss them conclusively. Which is a pity, because it would have been nice to read a fresh interpretation.

If you want more sci-fi in the sea, I recommend "The Swarm." For androids and discussions about humanity and androids, you can turn to Asimov or Blade Runner. If you're just looking for an interesting book, this one is a good choice.
