I picked this up as part of my continuation in this series.
"Komi Can't Communicate, Vol. 8" continues to follow Komi. Komi is a socially anxious high schooler who has made it her mission to make 100 friends. The only hurdle she faces is that she gets too nervous to actually speak to her peers. In this volume, the school takes a trip, a first for Komi, but with her new and potential friends by her side, she feels confident she will have a good time.
This volume was very okay. It was fun seeing the characters in a new setting, and it is great to see Komi pushing herself in new ways. Komi is forced to room with two girls she does not know, which is a great opportunity for her to meet new people, but it also causes a lot of tension for her. This volume definitely has some dramatized scenes that felt over-the-top for the situation the characters were in.
I am still curious about this series and will be picking up volume 9 soon!

One of my favorite things about Komi Can’t Communicate Volume 8  is the positive and realistic portrayal of female friendships.

Another thing I enjoyed about this volume is the developing romantic chemistry between Tadano and Komi. I love that one of the running jokes of the series is that most of the other characters can see the romantic chemistry between Komi and Tadano. While the two of them are too shy or oblivious to see that they reciprocate the same feelings for one another. Nonetheless, I think it adds some quality to the story and leans into the romantic element of the manga and making it a bit of a slow burn love story.

If you are looking for great light and funny romantic comedy then I highly recommend picking this one up.

Light spoilers ahead.

This one would absolutely have been five stars had Yamai not been seriously, seriously gross in this one. She's gross in every volume, but this one crossed way too far over the line.

There's also some unnecessary sexism here with Hitohito overhearing various group conversations and seeing them through a very gender essentialist lens.

Otherwise, there's so much to love about this volume. Shoko's and Hitohito's pre-trip conversation is so adorable and sweet and lovely. I absolutely love these two. I love how sweet and considerate Hitohito is of Shoko, and I love how she comes out her shell more and more when she'd around him. I really hope their relationship stays consistent, because it's one of the best I've seen in any type of media.

The whole trip is a lot of fun too. I like how Shoko gains some new friends, and I like how the three of them share some intimate and vulnerable details with one another. It was also nice to see some tackling of sexism here, with regard to Kato's dreams for the future, and I liked that Sasaki decided she was done with feeling shame over her interests.

I also very much enjoyed the Easter eggs in this book. I was so entertained by Najimi somehow showing up in every single group Hitohito passed. I love that character so much and love how true to themself they have been throughout this series. I also got a laugh out of the poor tour guide noticing that someone wandered away, only to see that it was Otori, because of course it would be her.

This was a fine volume, but it was hit-or-miss with the comedy. Most chapters were okay and while I like the gag surrounding Naruse, he's not an interesting character and the comedy was only amusing when Komi was involved. I really liked Tadano's talk with Komi about her past hardship with school trips and it was great seeing Komi's two groupmates go out of their way to make her happy.

I wouldn't say this was a bad volume, just not as funny as others. There were some charming moments and some of the humor was good, but overall it was just okay.

“Besides, is holding his hand really such a big deal? To Komi, it is very much a big deal.”

Seeing Komi make friends on her own/thrive with the girls she went to Kyoto with was really cute. I love how they wanted to make her comfortable and completely changed her experiences with past school trips.

SHE FELL ASLEEP ON HIS SHOULDER, AAAAAAAHHHHHH
