After Jax's father dies in a car accident, he goes to live with a guy barely out of high school and they're not even related. Jax's world is further turned inside out when the day after his thirteenth birthday turns out to be a day that only certain people with certain magical abilities get to experience. He soon learns that the legend of Merlin and King Arthur were real and their descendants are at war with each other. Good for reluctant teen readers and middle schoolers.

Fun read. This book is meant for younger readers but it's a nice premise (with a magical race of humans being stuck in an 'eighth day' separate from what the 'normals' experience, and a protagonist who is among those who can travel between the two). The story flows, interesting characters, and has the tie-in to history/mythology (with Merlin and King Arthur) for young readers who are interested in those topics.

One of many in our search for Arthurian Legend books for literature circles in our 6th grade classrooms, my co-teachers and I loved this book! Set in present day, it channels medieval legend into a fantasy/sci-fi present day plot. Great for boys and girls alike, the characters and plot keep on twisting until the very end.

WHAT—Evangeline and Riley? I did *not* see that coming.
