I had read this before now (January 2020) but I somehow did not write a review to remind myself how out there at times this story is. It reminded me of what I have heard about a telenovela; the love story is completely bonkers, the villains are comical and illogical, and time doesn't seem to work in the same way it does in reality. The book happens in "monthly installments" but sometimes there are years between months and it was sometimes halfway through a chapter before I figured that out. I love the food aspects of the story (the reason I was re-reading it) and how you learn about people through their food and also how food is prepared. I enjoyed the magical realism elements of the story (big surprise) but sometimes, the outlandishness of the fairy tale took away from the enjoyment for me.
I read this book around about the time the movie Chocolat came out so the two are sort of linked in my mind even if they are quite different in tone and style. This is a short, odd, magical book which follows it's own rules. Some of which I still don't understand. this is one I really must re-read to see if the whimsy holds amongst the writing.
PS. There was also a TV serial made for this which I watched in spurts. Need the full set as a companion I think.
