My favourite book I read in 2022.
Solnit is een meesterverteller. En voed je zoon op.
I always expect to be taken aback by Rebecca Solnit's writing. She has transformed the genre of creative non-fiction -- my favorite of her works being Men Explain Things to Me. Recollections of My Nonexistence was amazing in the same ways.
I love memoir, probably one of my favorite genres. This one was different in that Rebecca Solnit's eloquence and understanding of language add so many more layers to what is traditionally coined as "memoir."
I highly suggest listening to the audiobook as it is narrated by Solnit herself, and her voice makes it seem as if you're in conversation with her.

If you feel like your voice is silenced, if you feel like you live on the margin, or if you know you benefit from the institutions we have perpetuated throughout modern history, this memoir is for you. Exist, speak.
Penso llegir-me molts més llibres seus.

Reading this book is like reading a feminist manifesto combined with masterful poetry by Keats. This is the second most beautifully written memoir I’ve ever read. Just look at these phrases:
“I wanted urgency, intensity, excess and extremes, prose and narrative bursting against the confines.”
“addressing their want becomes so ingrained in you that you lose sight of what you want, and sometimes you vanish to yourself in the art of appearing to and for others.”
“Maybe starvation is how you apologize for existing, or slip toward nonexistence…”
“I wanted English to be an instrument on which many kinds of music could be played. I wanted writing that could be lavish, subtle, evocative, that could describe mists and moods and hopes and not just facts and solid objects.”
“I was in a world where levitation was normal but I tried to exceed the bounds and go higher. I tasted the cold of the upper stratosphere. Or I streamed across green landscapes.”
Or maybe I’m just really into extended metaphors. Still, how can you ignore such a profoundly and artistically crafted piece of writing about gender, feminism and well.. our existence.
