took too long to read and dragged on a lot. slight disappointment of a read from gayle forman as i loved where she went and i was here. badly escalated story and just rather pointless in some parts. allyson comes across as desperate- going to paris to see a boy u met once? feel like my opinions could be changed if i read the rest of the series but this did not excite me enough to want to do that.

When I started reading this book, I had just finished reading the If I Stay series so I was expecting something along the same vein.

Thus, when I first began reading Just One Day, I was a little disappointed. The emotions, character relationships, and the protagonist were all so vastly different. I also made the mistake of assuming the book was going to be something different than it was. I thought it would be a love story, basic and simple. But it wasn't. It was some wonderful, mature point of view of a girl who had come to life realizations.

If you are expecting a love story, such as I was, look away. But if you are looking for a coming-of-age novel about a girl finding her self (instead of some guy) then Gayle Forman has found the book for you.

By the end, I was sitting on the edge of my seat and can hardly wait to read the next book. I didn't think I cared about the male lead, Willem, but man. I was rooting for him by the end.

Recommended (but be sure to have your expectations correct. Not an out and out love story)

I have read books before that I had expected to be the action and adventure type, only for the book to turn out to be more romantic than anything else. I was not at all averse to spending time in the romantic aspects of the book, finding myself to be quite content. This book, however, I never would have picked up KNOWING beforehand that it was fated to be nothing but romance. I just don't do straight Romance so well.

I had sworn up and down, after seeing previews for this author's other book "If I stay," that I would NEVER read anything under her name. But then my school introduced something in our Resource Center called "Blind Book Dating," where we picked up a book wrapped in construction paper, some giving a word or two to hint at the book's content, and we were to be completely blind as to what book we had chosen for ourselves; everything from the genre to the author of the book was unknown to us, and we were to take a leap of faith and read the book no matter it's difference to what we would normally read.

As I had vowed to try something new, no matter my first reaction, I picked up this book and started reading. And I though "I could not be more happy that I did!" It was unlike anything I would have ever chosen to read for myself, and I found myself "falling in love" almost instantly. That is how Willem says that all love starts, and I must say that I had thought that he definitely knew what he was talking about. At least, that was my first impression.

Allyson has been dying for an adventure, something to shake up her perfectly stable life. Then, she meets Willem, and he's a dream come true. He shows her a side to herself she never knew existed. All is good until their 'one day' comes to a conclusion.

All goes to Hell-in-a-handbasket and Allyson doesn't know how to handle the aftermath of the choices she's made. So she doesn't; for about 6 freaking months! Jeez, dramatic much? It takes her way-to-freaking-long to put aside her obsession over a boy she knew for ONE DAY, and even then it's only just barely. With trying to forget Willem, she discovers a side to herself that she needed to find and learns to become more dependent on herself, rather than relying on everyone else to decide her path for her.

All-in-all, I could have done without the entire last part of this book. Her attitude after Paris made me literally nauseous. I now remember why I stick to fiction and fantasy and am completely averse to all things straight romance.

Oh man. I had a terrible moment about halfway through this book. I looked at the back cover a little more closely and noticed that there was already a sequel planned, but that I COULDN'T HAVE IT YET. Awful. If it's already written and finished, I will be super upset at whoever thought it was a good idea to hold it back. Rant over. I read this book in one day, and I'm trying to think of why it was so addictive. I think it set me up to expect Willem to pop up at any moment. My brain knew it probably wouldn't happen until the end and thought it realistically wouldn't happen at all, while my heart wanted it to happen as soon as possible. Delicious. Also, oh my, the scenery. I'm going to Europe again. Tomorrow.

I fell into this book by a bunch of accidents. Some really greatful accidents

Spoiler

I've never had a job. Never had to get one. Never had to do anything for myself. I am helpless. I am a void. A disappointment. My helplessness, my dependency, my passivity, I feel it whorling into a little fiery ball, and I harness that ball, somewhere wondering how something made of weakness can feel so strong. But the ball grows hotter, so hot, the only thing I can do with it is hurl it. At her

I had been waiting for the moment where Allyson would explode since the moment she just let Willem decide whatever she was about to do (staying in Paris or not) after the fight with the guys, and though I was expecting maybe a bit more of expressed anger on her side, this girl at last didn't dissappoint me.
I got mad through the book with Allyson, her mom, Willem, Melanie, almost everyone (except Dee). I think it's impossible not to do it at some point. What i was curious to see, is whether at the end, I was gonna end up not hating them all.
Because at some point I started understanding Allyson's struggle to get through life when she doesn't know how, and her character development was ashtonishing.
Because though I was expecting it, I was glad to see Willem wasn't the impossible person who abandons a lost girl in a foreign country she can't communicate into (YOU JUST DON'T DO THAT).
Then I'm glad I didn't hate them. I'm glad that at the end, it turns out all the people that made possible that Allyson ended up in that appartment's door made me see a side of humanity I don't always get the chance to see. And for that, I am thankful.

“Part of me knows one more day won't do anything except postpone the heartbreak. But another part of me believes differently. We are born in one day. We die in one day. We can change in one day. And we can fall in love in one day. Anything can happen in just one day.”

I cannot fathom over what I have just read. I thought it was impossible for an author to take me on a rollercoaster of feelings, but Gayle Forman didn't just take me on a rollercoaster. She took me on a never-ending trip filled with magical possibilities and gorgeous boys from Holland.

The thing about Just One Day is that it makes you want to go on as many travels as you can, to start living life to it's fullest. No possibilities are endless. I want an adventure like Allyson and Willam where you have no idea what's going to happen, but what you do know is that you have someone with you who cares about you.

“You have to fall in love to be in love, but falling in love isn't the same as being in love”
