I like the new character Moon beyond levels. The entry of Darkstalker in Moonwatcher's mind is spectacularly put together. The new character are starting to leave a mark on me a lot and I can easily empathize with all of them through this first book only which I did not develop in the first book of the Dragonet Prophecy. So easily, I think this book is starting beautifully into the new arc of the jade mountain prophecy. The subtle plot twists here and there and then the groundbreaking plot twists are established wonderfully. The plot twist and the end of the epilogue genuinely hooked me to be excited for the next book.
Does queen scarlet have the scroll and will Moon take it to free Darkstalker?
Will Darkstalker save everyone?
Or will he wreack havoc as described in stories?
And most of all WHO is Darkstalker, really?

This is one of the books in a highly imaginative series my granddaughter recommended to me at the beginning of the pandemic some 20 months ago now. I had reservations about reading a series targeted to seventh-graders, but the opportunity to have text-based conversations with her about the series totally offset my concerns. I’ve enjoyed the other five books, but this one may be the most engaging of them all so far.

Five dragonets were born into a kingdom of dragons with the sole purpose of ending all wars among the various factions and uniting all the kingdoms. Previous books include the descriptions of the various wars and the search by these five dragonets to find their identity—to better understand who they are and what their real role is in the grand purpose of things.

As this book opens, the war has ended, and the dragons have achieved an uneasy peace. The five determine that the best way to preserve the peace is to teach the rising generation to get along with one another. They do this best by providing exposure to these young dragons of all the other factions. They establish a residential school and deliberately force the various factions to be roommates and to attend classes together.

Moonwatcher is a young NightWing dragon who is telepathic. That’s a big deal under any circumstance, and even more for these dragons. Moon’s tribe lost its telepathic powers centuries ago, but Moon somehow recaptured them. Her mother sent her to the new school insisting that she keep secret her ability. To expose her talent would mean ostracism. But about halfway through the book she sees a vision of the future that involves the death of many of her new friends. She reveals her ability to both read minds and see visions of the future.

This author uses the plot vehicles in her book to look at fascinating things. Moon realizes the other young dragonets obsess about how the other dragonets in their class perceive them. In reality, most of them are worried about their next meal or a trip to the bathroom.

These books always explore issues faced by middle-grade people in a thoughtful, serious way. There’s plenty of mystery and suspense here, and the cliffhanger that sets the scene for the next book in the series is excellent.

3.5 stars. Solid addition to the series. Great to see both new and old characters slot into the new way of life. I really like the winglet, and am looking forward to reading their stories.

Completely engaging from the prologue to the last page. Lots of unanswered questions to make me eager for the next book. Great continuation of the original series.

This is so cute. The second lot of dragons are so precious, and I can't wait to follow each of their journeys! This entire series is a fast paced wonder that is easy to listen to as I go about my day. If you're looking for a new middle grade series, this would be a great one to get your talons into.
