Before starting Wings of Fire, I decided to take a look at the blurbs they had for each book and see if they caught my interest. The one for Moon Rising was, by far, the best for my reading taste. A school-like setting? A telepath as the protagonist? It seemed right down my alley. Since then, it became one of my most anticipated books ever, and after finally getting to read it, I'm glad to say it lived up to my expectations.
Before anything else, I must address the worldbuilding. I'm aware I repeat this too many times, but I'll never get tired of praising this series' universe and how greatly crafted it is. It's not extremely complicated or intricate, but it does manage to keep feeling fresh with each new release. Every book puts something new on the table, and I'm seriously fascinated by the amount of work, originality and thought the author puts on her works.
Jade Mountain Academy as a concept was already introduced at the end of the first arc, but only here we got to see how the school actually works. It was very fun learning the system along with the characters, seeing the lessons they took and just generally experiencing the school with them. I only wish the book had taken place during several months instead of just one week, to solidify the setting a bit.
The writing on this one was top-notch. I loved the way every character's brain worked differently, and how the whole NightWing powers were presented. I hope we get more insight into animus magic in later installments, but I still enjoyed what was delivered and personally think it was enough for the first book.
Now, the characters. This book had a huge set of characters: old, new, and somewhere in between. Moon, the main protagonist of the novel, was really relatable and easy to like, plus her POV was the most interesting this far into the series (I'm pretty sad we won't read it again, though!). Kinkajou, despite already have known her from previous books, grew in me the most during this one. Others like Winter, Turtle and Qibli were also great characters and the group together had a fantastic dynamic! (I'm surprised they only knew each other for less than a week! It was shocking whenever I was reminded of it). I'm interested in knowing more about them all and finding out their stories.
Darkstalker was a remarkable villain. He had some clear motivations and a truly captivating backstory, as well as a charming personality. The reasons he gave Moon for his actions sounded reasonable and even I wasn't so sure myself about his intentions for a little. I'm curious to see what will happen to him and how he'll (eventually) be defeated.
This is, without any doubts, between the best Wings of Fire books I've read (perhaps the number one!). The mystery was very well written and I found the whole book to be a spell-binding read! Even though I recommend reading the first six before this one, this is still a must-read for every fan of middle grade fantasy and similar!
