I first ran into the TV series on Netflix and it took me quite some time to actually starting to watch. But when I did, I really enjoyed it. Then I discovered it has a book on which it wad based on so I decided to read it first before finishing it.

And I have to admit than in the beginning I really enjoyed it. It was kind of like a solid four star read. I liked the story from the perspective of two sisters but also their loved ones and I have to admit Ivan is amazing. I also really liked the very describing insight into the Russian history before and during WW1. It wasn't just from the perspective of the two sisters but also the fighting soldiers and it had a great insight into what's happening in the factories etc.

But I have to admit that after like a half of it I stopped being interested in the story. There was too little about the sisters (even though the novel was basically called after them) and it was more of an insight into what's happening, the soldiers and revolutions and it became kinda overwhelming.

I have to admit that I really liked the appearance and brief mentioning of Rasputin. I recently became interested in the Russian history, especially during the reign of the last tsar and his children. This was amazing because it was about that era but from a different perspective of richer people. Overall, I liked it but the second half not so much so I'm rating three stars. I feel like this book is one of the rare ones when I liked the adaptation more (even though I haven't finished it yet).
