Definitely one of my top 5 books of the year and possibly ever. Felt the same kind of joy and excitement while reading that I used to get when reading my favorite series from middle school

Legendborn is an amazing book about grief, family, and community. It takes legends of old and gives them new life in a diverse, contemporary setting.

I loved this book. I loved Bree’s growth and how she came into her own through her grief. I love Alice and her strength of friendship. I love Nick and his unending loyalty. I even grew to love some unexpected characters. Bree creates a community for herself, and she does so in a way that feels authentic and caring.

The magic in the book was great. Bree’s experience as a Black girl in a mostly white setting was compelling and eye opening. There was just enough romance that I found it believable, but not so much that it overwhelmed the book. It’s definitely YA, but in a way where complexity isn’t given up in exchange for an easy story. There are twists, and difficult topics are broached well, but they’re done in a way that’s approachable and not too dark.

My only complaint is that the best ok takes place over so little time. I feel like the same story could have been told over months instead of weeks. I will definitely be reading Bloodmarked when it is released. 4.75 stars.

devoured this book.

Bree is my favorite YA protagonist ever—smart and quick, honest, and brave beyond doubt. She sees what’s happening in front of her own eyes and she actually believes it.

Her way of coping with grief is all-too-real even if it’s not healthy. Was there romance? Yes. Technically, there could even be two romances, and despite how much I adore Nick and Sel; this story is about Bree and her grief. Bree and her ancestors. Bree and belonging

The magic is just the cherry on top. Mwah. Best fantasy book I’ve read all year.
