Legendborn might just be one of the best books I've ever read. A King Aurthor retelling that focuses in on themes of generational trauma related to race, grief surrounding death, and incorporates the impacts of slavery and colonization into the mythos of the world and its magic? Amazing. Deonn created a work that for me really understands the genre of fantasy and what it really is at its core - yes magic and mythos but also social commentary and reflections through the world. It's a book that tells many stories and makes you feel each of them deeply and acutely. The characterizations were beautiful and nuanced, the character arcs were thought out and paced to perfection, and the story never let up, not even when there was "down time" in the plot. I will be thinking about this book for a long time and will be trying to convince everyone in my life to read it. I can't wait to read the sequel.

Lots of side characters, lots of terms, and actual love triangle. I'll edit this later.

After Bree’s mother is killed in a car accident, she finds herself tangled up in a secret Arthurian society at UNC.

Before this year I hadn’t read a single Arthurian inspired fantasy, and now I’ve read two and I’m coming to the conclusion that I love them. This book was SO good—the world building is incredibly intricate but still manages to be accessible, and the plot had me actually gasping by the end.

In fantasy, it’s almost always the characters that are make or break for me, and I really enjoyed the characters here—especially both Nick and Sel. This is one of the rare times you’ll find me ALL THE WAY IN on a love triangle, and I can’t wait to get to Bloodmarked and see how things continue to play out.

Thanks to some awesome friends for buddy reading with me!

Recommended to anyone, but especially if you like: Arthurian myths; well-done representation; love triangles

CW: Death of parent; grief; racism/slavery; lots of death/blood/injury; mentions of sexual violence

I've been wanting to read this for a while but I really felt like there was a lot of unnecessary background description and minor characters were not fleshed out enough. Best characterizations were with Bree and Sel. Also, the relationship with Bree and Nick was extremely rushed considering the timeline of the book is barely a month (this made it feel the most YA to me). There were elements I loved (the diverse cast, honest portrayal of grief, harsh realities of racism, magic in different cultures, and the relationship with Bree and her family) but it was not enough for me to truly fall in love with this book.
