I almost did not read this due to the YA classification and there are some YA tropes throughout the book that made me roll my eyes at parts of the first 1/3 of the book, but it is an incredible book with incredible character dynamics. I found myself gasping and laughing out loud more times than I thought I would. I mourned with the characters and winced when they got hurt and I marveled at the mysteries and magic revealed on each page. As an enby, I appreciated the nonbinary rep and the massive amounts of queer representation in the book. I hope we get to explore Greer’s character even more in the next book(s). The way Tracy Deonn writes is truly moving and magical and I loved exploring the world of Legendborne. I cannot wait to read the next volume!

I enjoyed this book a lot! What an intricate yet grounded fantasy system. It not only pulls from the King Arthur legends classic in predominantly white retellings, but also the legends and stories that grew from the displaced and enslaved ancestors of African Americans.

I love how the author does not shy away from talking about how the Ether and Root magic systems evolved alongside each other and how they interacted with one another throughout a checkered history.

I've never read a book like this that was intentional about the realities of being one of the few Black people, especially Black women, in a space. Even what would be mundane in your average story like hair care, is implemented and celebrated realistically.

As for the audio experience, Joniece Abbott-Pratt's reading is Excellent with a capital E. You feel like you're being told the story from a young person's voice. Th emotions come through no matter the character and it really connects you with our main girl Bree as if she's literally in the room telling you what happened. The voice acting and writing blended together beautifully.

Now for content,

The handling of the grief Bree and her father experience is also expertly done. It's as if the family is still together with how their relationships are fleshed out and continually affect their realities. Really, the relationships are done pretty well in this book. You really feel it when there's hurt, a misunderstanding, an understanding, or what have you.

Bree and Alice have my whole heart, I love how important their relationship becomes.

For the romantic relationships, being on the coattails another fantasy book I'm excited to see if this Arthur/Merlin/Lancelot thing works out how I want it too. It doesn't even have to be a triad, hinges are just as valid, please and thank you.

I love the fleshed out cast of characters and I'm excited to see them again in the next book!
Well most of them (I'm talking about you Tor and Vaughn -_-) But, honestly, having just finished the first Hunger Games book for the first time, I'm glad I can safely get attached to some of these characters lol.

Omg I literally binged this book! It was kinda slow and hard to understand ( for me) the first 130 pages, but the rest was so gripping. I still probably don’t understand everything about the world building, but that’s cause I had no clue what happened in the Arthurian legend 🥲 Anyway, it doesn’t really matter if you don’t either, cause the plot and the relationships are amazing, the grieving process is realistic and well-written. The diversity of legendborn is pretty good as well, with both race, disabilities and lgbtq+🫶🏻
 P. S. The banter between some characters got me giggling for real👀

Read this entire book on a flight to England and holy shit. The way this book captures grief, trauma, and how it can intersect with misogynoir was gripping.

Tracy Deonn is excellent at character writing and establishing interpersonal dynamics (and conflicts). She also creates a unique atmosphere with obvious (and not so obvious) foes. She empowers her protagonist and makes her multifaceted. She breathes life into Bree and, as a reader, makes her feel so real. And this doesn’t get into how she writes an ensemble cast either - good GOD I would be remiss if I didn’t get into that.

Every character contributes something to the plot and it’s amazing that this author finds a way to do that without rendering them to be one-note or just a plot device. She has a plan for every character - and pieces of dialogue have a way of retaining relevance chapters later in a refreshing way.

I wish I had a book like this when I was a kid. 2,000/10 recommend reading this book if you are interested in fantasy and coming of age books. It’s the gift that keeps on giving! Tracy Deonn, thank you for writing this.
