I've seen numerous film versions of this story, but this is first time I ever actually read it. Most versions I've seen stay fairly true to this original story.

Very sweet and short story. Discusses the nostalgia of the holidays which is comforting. A classic for a reason!

I really thought I would enjoy this, but it was way below my expectations. I didn’t feel any connection with any of the characters and in all honesty, I was just reading to finish it.
This is actually my first time reading this classic. I can’t say I loved it and it could be because I’m not getting the nostalgia most people are expressing in the reviews. I found it kind of boring. I’m sure if my family had decided to include this book into traditions, I would love rereading this book every year at Christmas. Either way, it wasn’t anything exciting and the lesson seemed too quickly learned.

Within us all we have a small Mr Scrooge who can get the best of us. In this sense, it is a universal book speaking to the human condition.
The highlight for me was the last page on how to react to those who judge one’s self-improvement: “Some people laughed to see the alteration in him but he let them laugh, and little heeded them; for he was wide enough to know that nothing ever happened on this globe, for good; at which some people did not have their fill of laughter in the outset; and knowing that such as these would be blind anyway, he though it quite as well that they should wrinkle up their eyes in grins. As have the malady in a less attractive form.”
The ‘grins’ (superficial happiness) is the ‘malady’ (deep rooted prejudices/problems) in the less attractive form because these people fail to confront it. However, Scrooge confronts his misery and hatred to the world as we see the rewards he reaps. We should think about Scrooge as a modern fable.
Part of the lower rating is because I had lots of distractions at the time and it affected reading pleasure and pace.
