50% gay smut and 50% I-will-find-you-in-every-lifetime epic romance. Honestly the sex scenes are the best part; they are cleverly written and the setting-specific innuendos are genius. The plot gets a little lost sometimes as the mixing of multiple different historical tales and folktales isn't done with the utmost precision. The revealing of plot twists is still (mostly) satisfying and the ending feels appropriate. Very good comfort food.

I feel bad for this rating because I really did enjoy the ancient China and 1700s China timelines, but the present day timeline was boring and unengaging, which is unfortunate because that’s where the plot takes place. (It’s mostly set in LA and pretty much exactly that Rachel sennott video that’s like “it’s LA!” “I’m addicted to drugs!” “Everyone is!”)
This book was also mismarketed as a romantasy, but to their credit, I’m not exactly sure what else they could have marketed it as… it’s not a romance because it does not follow some of the big rules of the genre. And I think it’s probably too erotic for most of the fantasy crowd. Unlike other reviewers, I kinda liked the matter of fact way the sex scenes were written and I thought the use of the word “influence” was both unique and funny lol.
Some of the mystery was intriguing but it completely fizzled out at the end. The last 40 pages were not good. Bad, in fact.
Basically my thoughts are that this had a lot of interesting elements, but the romance was unconvincing and disappointing + the author wasn’t able to make all the elements of the multiples lives come together (lol) in a way that was thematically cohesive.

This was not for me. I found the book hard to follow and I got to the end still do not understand exactly who is who in each lifetime. It’s also not a happily ever after which is fine if there is a plan for a second book but I was disappointed.
