2.5 still debating what I want to rate this...
Please skip my review if you don't want any spoilers.
1. If you only consider 'romance = HEA', this is not for you.
2. There are 3 timelines. It was hard for me since my reading was done by the audiobook format. After a while I did get used to it. By the end, I was gagged at the ending of fox timeline. Like it was a good surprise and it understand why we got it.
3. It was insta-love... I understand why it was because the author had to squeeze in 3 timelines within 300-ish pages. I wished I believed in their love. They are always talking about this 'connection' but I wanted to see more action and romance/character building. I don't want to be told they have a connection. I just want to see it and believe in it. But of course, when I got to the end, FUCK JOEY!. He's a dirtbag. And I don't feel bad in the slightest for him. Like bro, you always screw over River in every lifetime (except the fox timeline).
4. This is more of a love triangle than star-crossed lover for me. I fucken hate Jun (I forgot his present character name). Like I said before, all their relationship was under develop so it was very meh for me. And does Jun also remembers his past lives?
5. This felt incomplete and that ending was a bit disappointing. I don't know if this is a standalone or duology but I was unsatisfied. The present timeline had Joey on this journey for the emperor seal but there was no conclusion to that.... aside from the betrayal of the truth. That mystery was what got me interested in the present timeline. And what it left me was the knowledge that I hated Joey. That was it.
Also, the 'ending' of the emperor was unclear. How did he find out that Joey was sleeping with his cousin (it was vague, like he saw them giving each other looks? that's it?)? How did he die at the end? I just needed and wanted more.
6. River was kind of annoying in present timeline. Like it was unbelievable that they did all that just for a 'connection' (which I didn't believe). The whole "your my soulmate thing" was just annoying halfway through. And this is from someone who adores the soulmate thing. I wanted to smack him for what he said to his sister. It feels like she was the only grounded and logical person.
7. River should have just ended up with that korean friend at the end.

Probably the worst book I will read all year unfortunately. The plot made no sense and wtf with reincarnation + tragic curse (wheRE) + love triangle?? I powered through because I kept thinking “maybe this will get better and I’m just not understanding all three timelines.”
also I had the misfortune of having to clap my eyes on “influence” far too many times.

Interesting premise and characters! For a love to cross the ages, I needed their love to build more. Better foundation. Their love felt very flat in each iteration.
