This was the perfect book for me to read after attending ALA and the Newbery-Caldecott-Wilder banquet because, although I knew Newbery was a children’s book publisher, I didn’t know much at all about him or his life. Markel’s biography of him is a perfect introduction! Newbery knew that children needed books that were made specifically for them, a philosophy that we all know is correct and true! I loved how Newbery fought the norms of society and put his money where his mouth is and opened a children’s bookstore which led to the world of children’s books we have today! No wonder the Newbery was named after him!

Delightful picture book biography of John Newbery, who is considered by many as the father of children's literature. Will be using this as a read aloud on the library before the ALA Youth Media Awards.

This adorable book tells the story of John Newbery and the beginning of picture books with quirky illustrations and simple text. Though it's a biography, it is everything a biography in picture book format should be: cute, fun, easy to understand, engaging, and it tells a story children should know. And not just children - adults should know this one, too. I mean, have you ever wondered where the Newbery Award comes from?
I would definitely use this for storytime.

A really interesting look at the life of John Newbery and how he was inspired as a young reader to become the father of children's literature. Teachers, librarians, and lovers of children's lit will love this book, but though it is written for children, I can't picture too many kids that will pick this one up by themselves and just love it. It could make a fun book to read aloud for budding children's librarians.

Even the cover is joyous! In a time where many students ask me where the fun and funny books are, I could relate to this. Newbery himself was a marketer ahead of his time, with many tie ins among his books and products, and crossovers among books.
This made me think of another recent read Scary Stories for Young Foxes, in which the foxes heard many scary tales delivered to try to scare them into behaving.

Based on the historical note in the back, this back plays a little fast and loose with the facts. And leaves off stuff I'd prefer were in. No matter. This book is a happy book, joyful in the idea of reading books. Fun art, great layout, great flow. And books, books, books. I wanted to like it even more than I did. The writing was pretty good, but the art and overall design was better.
