Shelley Parker-Chan is dangerously talented. I found my heart aching for characters who are, for all intents and purposes, terrible human beings. Terrible... and yet still human beings. Parker-Chan walks a delicate line of never excusing or justifying the heinous acts of some of these characters. (The characters themselves definitely try, though, and it costs them dearly.)

The Radiant Emperor duology is a beautiful exploration of gender, ambition, grief, and hope. Highly recommend.

good fucking soup. The way that Shelley Parker-Chan writes about people and the relationships they have is just so delicious. I can’t wait to read more from them.

A successful sequel and conclusion to the duology. I listened to the audiobook and I'm glad I did. This story has complicated plot threads that I would have DNFed if reading.

I honestly forgot a lot of the previous book, but this book did a good job of reorienting me, slowly and deliberately. There was good character growth and battle scenes. I really enjoyed how the "mandate of heaven" was used in this book. It felt naturally integrated into the world.

The end was... Abrupt, but I get it. This is kind of historical fiction, so if you know history, you'd know how this was going to end.

In short, if you liked "She Who Became the Sun", you'll probably like this one.
