This definitely wasn't my usual type of read and I really didn't enjoy the insulting inner monologue of the MC during the first half of the book. But that being said, I'm glad I picked it up. The MC grew on me and I enjoyed the dark humour. It helped that she became less insulting of people's physical appearance in the second half too I think.
The big twist towards the end wasn't even vaguely on my radar nor anyone else's in the book club so we were all pretty impressed with that one.
An interesting one overall and definitely flew through the pages once it got over the initial setup.

3.5, but i round up. There are lots of directions i wanted this book to go in that it didn't go. But overall, I enjoyed it as a fall read.
DNF at page 128
I initially thought this was going to be one of the better serial killer thrillers that I'd read. But no. It's a DNF just like the others were.
This one follows Claire, a woman who has been killing people for a long time. She doesn't discriminate, either; if you look at her the wrong way, or annoy her, you might be next.
After her father's funeral, she gets a bit sloppy and one kill leads to someone following her. Will she get caught?
The writing on this one starts out strong, and then deteriorates. I thought I was going to enjoy this based on the first fifty pages, but by 100 pages in and I was beginning to wonder if I'd even finish it. The only thing keeping me going were the flashback chapters, but when I skipped ahead to find those and see how that plotline resolved, I saw that the writing was getting worse in those, too. Some of the things said by certain characters just seemed so ridiculous.
And the other thing that annoyed me was the description on the back. It mentions that Claire has a gift, that she sees people as ghosts before they die. I must have missed this, or it was such a fleeting mention that I forgot it was there, because 38% into the book and there has been ZERO mention of this so far.
Anyway, this is another example of why I don't like serial killer thrillers. I should stop buying these.
