This actually was my favorite of the Nevernight trilogy! The things that... truly irked me about the first two books seem toned down here, the new characters in Book 3 were fun (CLOUD CORLEONE MY DUDE!!!) and the weaving in of old friends was a nice touch, and the revelation that Mercurio is actually the series’ author was good plain FUN.

The sex is still... rough as hell, just so rough, so extremely rough, and I think this book has a few pacing issues as the other two did. But overall this was a GREAT conclusion to a series I have mixed feelings about. Kristoff’s world building is really, really solid and I would happily try out books about other characters set in the Nevernight universe.

This whole series in general is in incredible and it might join Kristoff’s Empire of Vampires in my top 10 ever read! This book was just too much for me in some areas to give 5 stars though. First off there was so much going on in the ending that I wasn’t really certain what happened. I got the gist of the ending but not enough to be wowed.
Second of all there was a pretty graphic homo sex scene that was a bit much for my taste.
Also the love interest between Mia and Ash at the end of the last book seemed more like a teenage lust relationship more than down right love and then this book portrays it like they’ve been together for decades and would end their life for the other one which is pretty surprising knowing what they went through the past couple books.
But all this is superficial issues. When Kristoff got down to the nitty-gritty it was so good that I finished this book in two days!

It was so creative how the actual books you are reading were made a part of the story. He added layers to this series. The different fonts, the footnotes, the narrator of the story talking directly to you, and then the books themselves became a plot point. It’s just such an intriguing way to make the reader a part of the story.

The moments where he called out the problematic parts of his own writing were funny too.

ALSO!!!! He made many references to metal/rock song lyrics and I enjoyed that very much.

I will say, however, that it’s a bit messed up he brought back a black character as white. I mean I get he’s supposed to be a spooky specter but c’mon, he could’ve at least been made of shadows or something. How are you gonna whitewash your own character??

Tbh I don’t think anyone should have been brought back. It made for a corny ending, and Tric coming back brought on kind of a love triangle? It’s also important to note that he was a dead man walking throughout this book and sleeping with him would basically be necrophilia.

And speaking of sleeping with someone! It felt like there was a lot more smut in this book. If that’s your thing then hey! Perhaps you’ll enjoy this! That’s just not my thing and it was kinda a bummer that this one had so much more of it. Like he literally had them 69-ing at one point. That’s wild. At least it was bi representation I guess??

It just.... had a lot going on. Too much. It seemed to take me a lot longer to get through reading this book because I found myself not really wanting to pick it up much. O, well.

“You never know what can break you until you're falling apart. You never miss your shadow until you're lost in the dark.”
