I really enjoyed the characters and their development and what I learned about Haiti while reading - I so appreciated the authors being able to weave in so much rich cultural and historical knowledge. Alaine’s voice is so strong, and the conflict between characters was given nuance that I greatly appreciated. More than once when I stepped away in the middle of reading I found my thoughts wandering back to the book and what was going to happen next, which is always a good sign for me.

I was swept up in this world from the beginning. Alaine is a sassy, spunky narrator who tells the story going to her parent's home country of Haiti for the first time, and dealing with her mother's Alzheimer's. I loved the atmosphere of this book, and felt like I learned more about Haiti. Alaine is also working on a school assignment of Haiti's history, so that is sprinkled in as well, which only adds to the story. The story deals a lot with hard family issues, but is able to keep keep a good balance between heavy subject matter and lighter tones of the book.

The one part of the book that didn't really work for me was the family curse plot line. It seemed really important to the plot and characters, but didn't get fully explained or wrapped up.
