4.25 AVERAGE

I love the art, but I don't care really about any of the characters. I mean fox girl is cute, but I don't care really what happens to anyone.

The story gets trippy - we're left floundering in disturbing and disjointed frames trying to figure out what's a memory, what's a fear, and what's real. Just like Maika and her monster.

Also, jebus christ, that's an adorable little fox. I can't be the only one waiting for a Kippa spin-off, can I?

this was even better than the first one??? i fucking love this series.

3.5 stars. A bit too wordy with GIGANTIC chunks of text, and so many different factions and characters, but the ideas and illustrations are luminous, and the story was readable enough after some orientation

I'm on aboard all the way through this series. Liu and Takeda have created such a deep, engrossing universe that I keep going back over earlier readings to make sure I have soaked it all in. There is so much going on here yet it never feels like work to get it all down, rather the rereads just bring you closer to where you want to be, and that's at the center of everything. Get on board.

An improvement over Vol. 1. The story is more cohesive, making for an easy to follow and interesting narrative. The art is (again) fantastic. There are still some big questions, but pieces are starting to fit together.

Loved this so much. More mystery and magic and pirates. Can’t wait for vol 3!

Cannot wait for the next volume. Love the story, love e the artwork, love the characters. Learning more about the history of this world and the creatures that inhabit it. This is definitely going to require multiple readings to pick up on everything.

I had a few hang-ups with the first volume, but Sana Takeda's artwork continues to amaze; it's lush, evocative, and possibly makes this series more enthralling than it actually is.

Compared to first volume's heavier emphasis on slavery, torture, mutilation, and witchcraft, the nautical bent to this volume's selection of eldritch horrors is more to my liking. Ghost stories at sea, marooned perpetrators of genocide, and carnivorous/cursed islands delve into some great tropes, and also feel slightly less like graphic content for the sake of shock value.

Here's a little dose of eeriness:

description

It was fun to see Maika and her monster reluctantly work together again, while both simultaneously going through their own existential crisis. Ren and Kippa also start to get their bearings and do useful things here, but they're still far from being a fully cooperative and coordinated group. So far, character development is subtle when it's not tied up with blatant plot-related revelations.

I also enjoyed the new addition of war propaganda formatted infodumps that were tacked on at the end of each chapter. It was less tedious and more digestible than the lecture format used in other issues; it also added another layer of anachronistic whimsy to the series.

There's still a lot of world-building and setup going on in this volume, but it's beginning to feel less dense and less convoluted, with an increase in momentum and direction that has me looking forward to the next volume! Too bad it's likely another year away.
