Pediatrician physician and Medical Examiner Dr. Sara Linton and her eighth-month pregnant sister Tessa were having a wonderful ice cream break at Dairy Queen in Grant County, Georgia, when the call from police chief Jeffrey Tolliver interrupted their fun. Andy Rosen's body was discovered lying under the bridge near the college, Grant Tech.

Did he jump or was he pushed? The police ask Ellen Schaffer, student at the college who saw the body while jogging and reported it, if she saw anyone or anything else, but she hadn't.

Tessa promises to remain in the car while Sara and Jeffrey and his men examine the body and the surrounding river bed and woods. However, shortly after Sara begins checking Andy's body, Tessa leaves the car and walks up the closest hill - she desperately needs to empty her bladder. Sara does not want her sister to see Andy - the body is a crumpled mess.

When Chuck Gaines, the slimy head of security at Grant Tech, shows up with his new employee Lena Adams who recently quit working for Jeffrey, the scene becomes even more painful, as Chuck makes racist jokes and obscene attempts to be funny and Lena scowls. But Jeffrey notices Lena goes pale when she finds out who the dead young man was - did she know Andy?

After her brief examination, Sara realizes Tessa never returned! Alarmed, she also climbs the hill, following vague signs of Tessa's passage. Becoming more and more panicked, Sara tells herself she is being silly - until she finds Tessa's shoe, and then blood...

"A Faint, Cold Fear', book three in the Grant County series, is an intricate dance of damaged characters and plot twists. I enjoyed this fast-paced read, but I think it is better to begin with book 1, [bc:Blindsighted|21718|Blindsighted (Grant County, #1)|Karin Slaughter|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1390283925s/21718.jpg|2590340] instead of with this novel. There are several ongoing character dramas which continue from book to book. Plus WARNING: extremely graphic.

The character of Lena Adams is a living image of some untreated abuse victims. I have seen people like her, and maybe gentle reader, you have also. Repeat after me - we only have responsibility where we have power.

Interesting character development, especially for Lena, who's complex and realistically layered. I found myself routing for her despite her self-destructive path. Jeff and Sara had their ups and downs too, so I liked them in this one because they were more flawed. Good twists and excellent investigation and crime procedurals (which is Slaughter's trademark).

Overall, a great novel, a character-driven slow boil with some annoying mechanical writing issues ( Hundreds of useless dialogue tags and silly adverbs that make it hard to read—thankfully, Slaughter's prose improved significantly in her standalones).

2.5 stars. Least favorite Karin Slaughter book. I cannot stand Jeffrey.
challenging dark emotional informative mysterious tense fast-paced

I think I enjoyed this one the most so far. It was so twisty and will probably be a short review because I like to remain spoiler free.

LIKES:
1) Sarah and Jeff. They may not be in the best place but I am liking that their story feels real.
2) Lena and Nan. I think they are both very good for each other and I am seeing SOME of the negative homophobic statements leaving.
3) introducing more characters to hate. It's nice that Slaughter doesn't waste time on secondary characters. What I mean by this, is that she doesn't waste her talent. These minor players are still richly described and truly part of the story, even is only for a short while.

DISLIKES:
1) Where I said there was less stereotypes, there is still some questionable phrases and parts that really show the age of when this was written. It's a dislike but also shows how far we have come.
2) the way the narrator pronounces "wh" words.... UGH
