Awful. Just terrible. And written by someone who seems to have no clue about Britain - or at least was writing it for Americans with no idea about the uk and didn’t bother to do anything about it before putting it on UK Amazon.

Super cute, quick page-turner

I don't tend to gravitate toward romance novels, but they snuck this one past me with the mystery genre tag. I'm glad they did! It was a very quick read, in part because it's quite short, but it also did a wonderful job of keeping me invested in the characters and in solving the mystery. Can't wait for the next book in the series!

Maggie runs an antique shop and goes to an auction where she buys an old box that was stolen from a hot professor. Hot professor turns up to get back the old box and the old jar that was in the box. They find the old jar in the hands of his friend-turned-enemy who is lying dead in a puddle of his own blood. Now, hot professor has the most motive to kill him and now they have to solve the mystery so he can prove his innocence. Oh, yeah, ghosts.

The romance and attraction kind of bogs down the plot because I kept questioning why someone would be so devoted to someone they met two days ago. Reading this book made me wonder if I should keep a "Might too asexual for this" shelf here on goodreads. This cozy mystery left me feeling cold.

I was in the mood for a light, fun mystery for fall and I thought this one would be perfect. Unfortunately, despite the interesting setup, the story really failed to even provide the light entertainment I was looking for. Let's put aside the atrocious love at first sight plotline which felt so unbelievable. Let's put aside the fact that literal ghosts appear in this book and are entirely pointless to the plot. Let's focus instead of the jumbled mystery itself.

Maggie Mulgrew, an American who has taken over her deceased aunt's antique business in the aptly named Holmestead, England (no, no related to Sherlock Holmes), attends an antique auction only to be caught up in a stolen antique jar conspiracy and murder, along with the handsome but most boring love interest ever Pembroke Martin. There are only two main suspects who bore a semblance to suspects, and if Maggie made gooey eyes at Martin one more time I was just going to rip my hair out. It feels incredibly rushed in some areas (mainly, developing an intriguing mystery with complex characters) while extremely drawn out in other areas (like all the scenes of Martin and Maggie attracted to each other for no apparent reason).

An interesting premise, but the story feels underdeveloped with too much focus on emotional scenes with little focus on building up reasons for those emotions.

Ghost of a Chance is more of a mystery than a paranormal about a ghost. The ghost is only a very slight part of the story but it is nicely tucked in. Main character, Maggie Mulgrew, is am American living in England for six months. She has inherited her great-aunt's store and house and is now an established business owner of an antique store. Her best friend from childhood, Spencer, works for her.
The mystery begins after a stolen apothecary jar is sold at an auction, where it was much sought after by three parties. Murder and romance are both a part of the story and both are tied up nicely. I will be seeking out more in the series.

What a fun mystery. I have to admit a love of history, archeology, and antiques, so this book ticked a lot of boxes for me. On top of that, though, it was just plain fun to read. I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series.
