In her excelent blend of golden age and contempary sci-fi, Butler tells the story of humanity poised on the very edge of extinction. Saved only by an alien race of advanced creatures who are willing to give humanity what it "needs" to survive, but not without a certian cost. Humanity is faced with complex choices of identity and survival that are not entirely their own in this well-told, but somewhat formulaic, tale.
