This had potential, and I was really genuinely enjoying it until about the last 100 pages or so. There's really not much I can say about what I didn't like about this book with this review remaining spoiler free, but I'll try to be as cryptic as possible. It really guts me that this was a 5 star prediction lol

First though, I do want to bring up its merits, because I think that it has some.

Things I liked: It's set in a small town based on a real town that not only is near to where I live but that I've been to several times and it mentions several landmarks that are familiar to me. I also liked the illustration elements and how they get spookier and spookier as the book goes on.

Things I didn't like: Pretty much everything else but especially the big plot twist at the end. Absolutely the stupidest thing in the world. Made half of the book absolutely pointless. This could've been edited down to just 200 pages and it would've been better and not as much of a waste of time.

I only add the half a star because I have a soft spot for the small town that the book is based on.

Holy freakin’ cow! This book was soooo good. It was nothing like what I had excepted it to be, but it was so much better! The majority of the story had an eerie & spooky feel, until you get hit with the massive twist. While the twist was shocking and unexpected, it didn’t feel at all unrealistic.

Important Note: This book contains some AMAZING artwork/images, that really elevate the experience of this story. Due to this, it’s not a book I’d recommend listening to on audiobook, due to the loss of these pictures throughout the story.

Constantly had me guessing what was going to happen next and always took a turn I wasn't expecting. Brought new perspectives to lifestyles and ideas that people tend to skirt around.

Don't you love when you start a book and just know it will be five stars? Then keep reading and realize it might be a new favourite of the genre?
Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak is giving me a book hangover.
It has all the elements I love in a spooky read - unreliable narrator, mysterious backstories, atmosphere, local legends, and a fantastic hint of supernatural.
Round this out with essential parts of the story being told through art - both creepy and heartbreaking - and this book was an absolute winner.
Many elements reminded me of some of my favourite horror movies, the ones with well-thought out stories and unsettling twists that make you gasp.
 100% recommended!

Author doesn’t attempt to hide his vile politics and the writing is not on the level of an adult novel. Also, for a book that’s marketed as horror, it’s not scary.
