A solid fantasy book, faster paced as the first one in the series. It takes a bit to get into for me as the writing style is not typical for a modern fantasy. I would not call it literary fantasy (as this book is often claimed to be) but instead a fantasy with a chaotic writing style (unfitting perspective/narrator changes). After a while, I got used to it and could enjoy the magic of this book.

I literally had the anxiety pooling in my stomach for the last half of the book.

I thought book two suffered a little from second book syndrome, this may have been deliberate though as Vasilisa seemed conflicted in what she wanted but she is more decisive by book 3.

I definitely recommend reading this trilogy if you like stories about fae

Now that, is how a sequel should be.
Also, what do I do to get the next book, right now?
Somehow, the sequels in a fantasy series seldom live up to be as good as the first - however, [a:Katherine Arden|13922215|Katherine Arden|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1510754830p2/13922215.jpg] has come up with an amazing story. Vasya still remains one of my favourite YA leads and she proved it once again with her wits, magic and character in this book.
The story captures so well about a girl thrust into the world, how she grows, makes mistakes, learns from them and comes out as a victor against her own demons and true evil. I wish I could be her, riding Solovey through the snowy forests, freeing firebirds and falling in love with the Winter King.
Morozko. Sigh. So much more of him in the next book, please.
I loved Sasha. A righteous hero, a good brother, torn between his loyalties to the church and his love for his wild sister.
Again, the author's lucid language transports you to each of the places she describes, and makes you feel like you know every character in the book so well. And, again, that cover art!!
If it is not clear enough from my fan-girling, I will say so again, I simply loved this book, the story, everything. I have nothing to complain about, as it turned out to be better than I imagined.
Given, how 2018 is hurtling by, thankfully, January is not very far away. To the rest of the world, read this now!

Excellent sequel and a great book on it's own. History plus fantasy plus morality plus romance. What more could I ask for?

“I did not know I was lonely, she thought, until I was no longer alone.”

edit: reread feb 2022. I LOVE THIS SERIES SO MUCH

This was absolutely BEAUTIFUL. I have no words? I just want everyone to read this series right now. With an absolutely enthralling, strong willed main female character and vivid magic and folklore, what more could you ask for?
