Okay I think I was the problem when it came to enjoying this book. I was forced to read it for a class, and maybe that was the crux of it.

However, I did like it for the most part. I found the reading rather easily and enjoyable, and you could pretty much read through it fast. It wasn’t really right up my alley, though (maybe neo-victorian novels aren’t), even if the plot was interesting. I found Grace’s descriptions a bit boring (I’m sorry).

On another note, I liked the ending. I liked how Grace was always some sort of a continuous connector between life and death, first when she was accused of murdering Kinnear, then when her mother died, and then at the end when she doesn’t know whether she’s pregnant (bringing life into this world) or has got a tumor (she’s dying).

A very interesting critique of the victorian morals, gender dualism, and womanhood set in an unsettling atmosphere.

literary take on 1840s true crime?
I did enjoy the themes of disparities in sexual freedom for men and women. when everything was said and done it was a satisfying ending, but I’m not sure I would recommend this book to anyone. maybe it just wasn’t for me, but it felt a little sluggish
