I so wish I liked this book more. I don't know if the translated versions just suck, but I tried, I tried two different editions, but I couldn't bring myself to enjoy it most of the time. Maybe my mistake was reading it in Bulgarian and not in English, maybe the book just isn't for me, I don't know. Giving it 3 stars instead of 2, because I did laugh once or twice.
3.5 stars for Alice in Wonderland and 2 stars for Through the Looking Glass.
The same themes and techniques are prevalent in two books, with Through the Looking Glass missing much more than its predecessor:
- Whimsical humour: lots of things that happened to Alice and her reaction to them were hilarious. Sometimes, though, they're just absurd for the sake of being absurd and didn't really entertain me. Of course, I might not have the taste of a 10 year old. Maybe that's a good thing.
- Social commentary: Alice was educated to be polite, considerate, and logical. The worlds she ventured in were rude, violent, and chaotic. It does apply to some extent, but not entirely. Most of the time the rudeness was too much. I felt like skewering every other person Alice met in her adventures.
I think I enjoyed many tidbits of the story, like the walk through the forest with the Fawn, so tender and yet so emotional; the Queen of Hearts was memorable and just the right amount of absurd, the Duchess and the King of Hearts were fun, too. The moment when Alice became a giant and realised she wasn't scared because they were just a bunch of cards... man, that was powerful.
Some complaints:
- TOO. MUCH. POETRY.
- What kind of 6.5 year old is Alice? Her language, her calm behaviour, her rationality etc. She oughtta be at least 14.
- Carroll could have controlled the absurd elements a bit better and the story would have been a real blast.

Este audio libro la verdad que fue bastante interesante junto con la historia de Alicia llena de locura y risa pero siendo totalmente sincera no fue un libro tan interesante como esperaba, pienso que ya para finales de año no lo voy a tener tan presente.
Aunque si es bueno para tener una lectura ligera y entretenida ya que es bastante corto y fácil de leer

Not having read the book before nor watched the movies, it was interesting to discover the full story of Alice's "dream ". Definitely weird and surreal, didn't find Alice very loveable or interesting at all, but the whole world she discovers it's funny in a strange way. I wish there were more of them and less of her.
The voices the narrator makes at one part were too high and a bit annoying to me but in general it's fun and interesting that she changes the tone.

This book was wonderful. This book was the most fun book that I have read in a really long time. It is indeed outlandish and weird, but it was in such a charming way. I much prefered Alice's Adventures in Wonderland than Alice Through the Looking Glass, as it was much more engaging and Lewis Carroll was attempting to recapture the magic of the previous novel. All in all this was an enjoyable read, and I do not understand the hate this novel gets from reiveiwers.
