Well, it took me a while to read as I am out of the habit of reading, but this was actually rather good. I did find the first part of the book (where Aubrey has no ship and is busy escaping debtors) less interesting than the part where they took to the sea again, but generally this was an excellent read. And there are another 17 in the series, though I will be reading something else first.

I've been surprised at how compelling these books are -- the writing is certainly not contemporary, the detail of naval warfare unfamiliar and at times confusing, the dialogue even more difficult given the colloquialisms often in use, and I've read less fiction than I used to in recent years -- but nonetheless, I read 80 pages a night of this slightly unapproachable period-piece historical fiction and can't help but finish the book once I start. Same thing happened with the first book in the series. I shave a star off because I figure that there are 20 some odd books in the series and we can't start with marks that are TOO high. There's got to be room for improvement.....right?

I enjoyed it, but due to distractions and the arcane language I didn't stay very engaged.
It is very well written and the story is interesting and complex. There is all sorts of subtlety but some was lost on me as I rode my bike listening to this book.

This is my third voyage through the canon, and this book is simply astounding.
This is a sequel to a book ostensibly about naval battles. And yet the principal drama is romantic, financial, and shaking the bedrock the friendship.
HMS Surprise is my favourite, but Post Captain is a close second.
