I was a little bored at the beginning, but this definitely picked up at the end. It was really interesting to read about such a modern concept in the language of the late 1800s.

The story was a little dated, with racial references and with ancient attitudes toward relationships. However, I understand that in its time it was pretty controversial. I thought the author handled sexual tension pretty well overall. In the end, the experience of reading it was mildly satisfying from a historic perspective. Feminist literature has come a long way since 120 years ago.

I've long heard of this book, obviously, and I'm not sure what made me decide to read it now, but I'm glad I have. This is very incisive about the stifling roles women face(d) as wives and mothers. I love the style it's written in, realistic with so much psychological depth. Somehow I already knew the ending, probably from cultural osmosis, but that only added to the sense of inevitability.
