The book has to be read in the historical, cultural, and political context to grasp the boldness and significance of the novel.

If you're able to, pick up a critical edition of Kate Chopin's work. Only then you'll be able to appreciate the work for what it is. A daring portrayal of a Victorian woman realising she wants to live only for herself.
