Loved this insight into the beginning of han and qi’ra’s relationship before we meet them in the solo film.

YA novel, yet deftly written. The author has a good grasp on what makes Han tick and it neatly fits his established character (unlike Last Shot). Fleshes out Qi'ra as well, fun novel over all.

Very important to know, this is a prequel to Solo, likely as a result of book packaging (as it came out just after the movie). Was this book at all nessisary? no. Despite that, I honestly think it improves the movie, adding character and history to the main relationship. I would even suggest these characters are more realistic that those portrayed in the movie (from a direction perspective, the acting was fine). Knowing a bit of star wars, this felt like Han.
A few draw backs. While much of what they had to include (because this was a prequel to a movie) was pretty okay, like the movie it felt like that just had too much to explain, and a needless "oh lets throw this thing in because it explains a small thing that wasn't important at all. It might not completely interrupt the flow."
Additionally, a lot of the writing is excessively expositional. Listening to the (full sound effects) audiobook completely negated this as a flaw, because the paragraph on "Han betrayed me, I'm all alone, I have no friends anymore, wait, he hasn't left?" was fine because on the blasters shooting, and the blast doors closing.
Story was good enough and made me appreciate the movie slightly more, so overall not bad!

Its been a long time since I've read a Star Wars inspired book. I really enjoyed the premise, and the back story of Han growing up. It was a little too fast paced for me though. Meaning that situations that the characters found themselves in were too easily gotten out of. Kind of like watching a 30 minute tv show, and everything trying to get squeezed into those 30 minutes. Overall I did have fun with this one, just a bit too fast, and easy.
