Living near the areas where the Revolutionary War took place has always intrigued me. I’ve been to a few of the local historical areas when I was a kid but after reading this book, I want to really go back and visit the ones I’ve been to and also see the ones I’ve missed. I learned more about this part of our history from this book than I did from any textbook in school.

He’s a fabulous writer! ( I should say was, since he passed away the day after I finished this book)

I am definitely going to read more of the books he’s written! I’m looking forward to immersing myself into more history!
informative slow-paced

Good read. A tad too fast, and while I did wish it went on longer, I think by focusing mostly on just 1 year he managed to really tie the story together. It's very "edge of your seat" reading, though, and it does convey *some sense* of just what kind of odds the Continental Army was facing when fighting the British.

It was OK. LHA brings the period to life but I was expecting more of a knockout like her Chains trilogy or her book on yellow fever in 1793 and it didn’t deliver that.

Excellent historical account of the first year of the American Revolution. This account is not bogged down in historical details that many more scholarly books are. McCullough keeps it fresh, entertaining, and a straightforward read. More scholarly types may find it lacking in substance, but this is great book for the masses.

Very interesting. One year of the the revolutionary war, but without the halo around it. A year following Washington and his army from disaster to retreat to disaster. The few wins they get are very exciting, but mostly misery, illness, and bad behavior from a ragtag bunch of rebels. The British could’ve won the war a half dozen times if they had made different decisions, or if not for random twists of luck and weather that favored the Americans. Truly fascinating read.

Great short history of one of the most important years in world history. Really interesting to read from the perspective of a believer in God.

Meh.  History isn't as fun as fiction.
