A cross between a history and a novel, I really enjoyed this book, and that is the best thing about it. It's not very long, and is certainly not comprehensive. But if you want a history book that helps you enjoy the story of the Revolutionary War, and especially the personalities involved such as Washington, John Knox and Nathaniel Green, I would highly recommend this one.

Well done!

Set in the busy year of 1776, the author narrates a compelling story full of the intricacies of war, rebellion, and intrigues that naturally occur from such times, and how both the American and British sides fight for their own conceived just cause. Both sides have their cause to fight for, which McCullough states as American independence, establishing their indisputable rights against the tyranny of Britain, and the British, re-establishing their sovereignty as the most powerful empire during this time against what they would call a ragtag ill-mannered group of ungrateful people. McCullough delves into the individuals who shaped this influential time, such as George Washington, who was carrying the great burden of making the American cause a success, Henry Knox, Joseph Reed, Nathaneal Greene, King George, and Sir William Howe, a great British general to stamp out the seeming “futile” attempt for a rebellion and establish the power of the British empire on both the Parliament’s and the King’s initiative.

Reading this book increased my knowledge of the beginnings of the American Revolutionary War so much. The way the whole year was narrated was done in an entertaining way and made all of the people involved in the events of the year come to life.
