McCullough is great. This was so compelling that I need a sequel. Finishing after the Battle of Trenton, it felt like the end of Empire Strikes Back. I'm not sure who was who, but definitely they were looking out a big window at the rebel starfleet, contemplating their next move.
“Especially for those who had been with Washington and who knew what a close call it was at the beginning- how often circumstance, storms, contrary winds, the oddities or strengths of individual character had made the difference - the outcome seemed little short of a miracle.”
It’s hard for me to rate a book like this because frankly, I don’t typically ever pick up straight nonfiction history books. I’m giving it 5 stars because it was very good and I don’t have a “better” history book to compare it to.
It’s incredible how watered down American history classes are from middle and high school. Reading this makes me want to read more about history because, geez, my idea of American independence is nothing like the real deal.

Made it partway but just wasn't hooked. I tried this on audio
It was a little slow for me but something I've been meaning to read for a while and I'm really glad I did because I understand a lot more about this period of the war. I'm especially glad that I have the background info to understand why Washington crossing the Delaware and the following victory was so important. I just recently toured Mount Vernon so this time period was fresh in my mind.
I listened to this over multiple road trips. While I find the subject matter fascinating, hearing the details of each battle was a bit much for my present stage of learning more about the Revolutionary War. Nothing against the author-I was just really hoping to learn more if the events leading to our rebellion.
Solid 4.5, really well done. I am beginning to understand the McCullough hype.
